About Sewing
Arts Centre

Come say hello, meet the team, and see for yourself what makes Sewing Arts Centre a special place for sewists in Red Deer and across Central Alberta.

We opened Sewing Arts Centre with a simple mission:

To continue the tradition of service excellence, fair pricing, and strong community connection that has always defined how we do business in Red Deer and throughout Central Alberta.

At Sewing Arts Centre, we’re more than just a sewing machine store — we’re a part of central Alberta’s vibrant creative community. Located on Gaetz Avenue in Red Deer, with plenty of free parking, we’ve created a welcoming space where sewists of all levels can find not only high-quality products and expert repairs but also guidance, inspiration, and connection.

Whether you’re here for a quick spool of thread, advice on a new machine, or complex repair work, you can expect the same level of care and attention every time.

Our Team

Martín Véliz, Technician and Owner

Martín is Red Deer’s and Central Alberta sewing machine guru. In buying a machine from him you can be confident in his recommendations because not only does he know how sewing machines, sergers, long arms and industrial machines operate, but he also knows the insides of the machines, and he knows how to sew.

He learned his trade with the largest dealer in the Red Deer area and has formal, advanced training in addition to extensive on-the-job experience servicing domestic and industrial sewing machines of all makes and models.  His skills are evident in the satisfaction of customers and the thousands of machines he has repaired and serviced over the past nine years.

When Martín’s not busy working, he can be found at home fixing almost anything that’s broken (usually by his children) and making creative memories with his family.

Jena Braun, Sales

Jena Braun has been part of the Sewing Arts Centre team for over two years and often says, “time flies when you’re having fun.” Born and raised just outside of Red Deer, she moved to the city over 20 years ago and takes great pride in both where she works and where she lives. Creativity runs in her family—Jena grew up watching her mom work on artistic projects and has followed a similar path, exploring sewing, knitting, crocheting, painting, drawing, jewelry making, and more recently, bag making with industrial equipment.

Outside of work, Jena enjoys spending time with her family and friends—whether it’s over coffee, reading, hiking, camping, playing games, or cheering on her kids in their many sports. One of her favourite parts of working at the Sewing Arts Centre is connecting with regular customers. She loves knowing people by name and offering thoughtful, personalized help—something she credits to her dad. Her goal is to make every customer feel heard, valued, and remembered.

Victor Doerksen, Director of Business Operations

Victor is professionally credentialed as a FCPA, FCGA. He has a wealth of experience in banking, government, retail business, not for profit, and organizational leadership. He loves to go on long backpacking trips and has hiked the West Coast Trail 10 times at last count. Sewing and creativity are not his strength but he is great with numbers, finance, and business.

A Community-Driven Store

We’re not just here to sell sewing machines. We’re here to help build a creative community, one relationship at a time.

From participating in local maker markets and community events to connecting with sewing clubs, schools, and long-time sewists across the region, we’re here for the long haul. We believe that every interaction is an opportunity to earn trust, whether that’s helping someone find their first machine or guiding a lifelong sewer to their dream quilting setup.

We proudly serve Red Deer and communities throughout Central Alberta, including Sylvan Lake, Lacombe, Innisfail, Stettler, and beyond. If you’re coming from out of town, you’ll find free parking and easy access off Gaetz Avenue, making your visit as convenient as possible.

The only place to take your sewing machine!

Martín was trained by the absolute best and really knows his stuff! He is extremely knowledgeable with all makes and models of machines. There is nowhere else I would take my sewing machines for repairs or maintenance. He is kind, honest and genuine. Having worked alongside Martín for many years, I know firsthand the precision and attention to detail that he has for his work!

~ Darian Parkin

I HIGHLY recommend Martín.

If you need maintenance or repairs to your sewing machine, I HIGHLY recommend Martín. Having worked with Martín, I know first hand how honest and reliable he is, and I also know how much pride he takes in his work. Having invested a lot of money in my various machines, Martín is the only person I trust to work on them.
